I’m a supplier in the precision CNC machining business. And let me tell you, when it comes to inspecting the parts we churn out, having the right measuring tools is super crucial. It’s like having a secret weapon in your toolbox. That’s what I’m gonna chat about in this blog – the measuring tools we use to make sure our precision CNC machined parts are top-notch. Precision CNC Machining

First off, let’s talk about the trusty caliper. Yeah, it’s one of the most basic but essential tools in our inspection process. There are two main types: vernier calipers and digital calipers. Vernier calipers have been around for ages. They use a sliding scale to measure dimensions, and yeah, they take a bit of getting used to reading the scales, but they’re pretty accurate when you get the hang of it. Digital calipers, on the other hand, are a lot easier. You just press a button, and they give you a clear digital readout of the measurement. They’re quick and handy for measuring things like the diameter of a hole, the thickness of a part, or the length of a shaft. We use them all the time on the shop floor to do quick checks as the parts are being made.

Next up, the micrometer. This little tool is like a super – accurate measuring wizard. Micrometers are designed to measure small dimensions with extremely high precision. Usually, they’re used for measuring things like the outside diameter of a small rod or the thickness of a thin sheet. There are different types of micrometers, too. Like outside micrometers for measuring the external dimensions and inside micrometers for internal measurements. They work by using a screw – based mechanism to measure the distance. The precision of a micrometer can be down to a few thousandths of an inch, which is crazy accurate. When we’re making parts that require tight tolerances, the micrometer is our go – to tool.

Now, coordinate measuring machines, or CMMs for short. These are the big guns in the inspection world. A CMM is like a high – tech detective that can measure the 3D coordinates of points on a part’s surface. It uses a probe that can move in multiple axes to touch different points on the part. The machine then records the coordinates of these points, and based on that, it can calculate all kinds of dimensions like lengths, angles, and profiles. CMMs are awesome because they can measure complex geometries that would be really hard or impossible to measure with simpler tools. They’re also really accurate, and they can measure a part quickly and repeatably. We use CMMs to do a full inspection of a part after it’s been machined to make sure it meets all the specifications.

Optical measurement systems are also becoming more and more popular in our line of work. These systems use cameras and advanced software to measure parts. The great thing about optical measurement is that it’s non – contact. That means you don’t have to touch the part you’re measuring, which is really useful for delicate parts that could get damaged by contact measurement. You just place the part in the measuring area, and the system takes pictures and analyzes them to determine the dimensions. Optical measurement systems can also measure features that are difficult to reach, like small holes or internal threads. They can be really fast, too, which is great for high – volume production lines.

Another tool we rely on is the surface roughness tester. The surface finish of a part is just as important as its dimensions. A rough surface can cause problems like increased friction, wear, or even corrosion. A surface roughness tester measures the texture of the part’s surface. It works by dragging a stylus across the surface, and the movement of the stylus is recorded to calculate the roughness parameters. There are different ways to express surface roughness, like Ra (average roughness) or Rz (maximum height of the profile). We use surface roughness testers to make sure the surface finish of our parts meets the customer’s requirements.

Now, why is all this inspection so important? Well, in precision CNC machining, even the slightest deviation from the specifications can cause big problems. If a part is too big or too small, it might not fit properly in the assembly. Or if the surface finish is wrong, it could affect the performance of the final product. By using these measuring tools, we can catch any issues early in the process. That way, we can make adjustments and ensure that every part we deliver is up to par.

As a precision CNC machining supplier, we take pride in the quality of our work. We know that our customers rely on us to provide them with parts that meet their exact needs. Whether it’s a small batch of custom – made parts or a large – scale production run, we use these measuring tools to guarantee the quality of what we produce.

If you’re in the market for precision CNC machined parts, we’d love to chat with you.
