How does temperature affect formwork?

This is because the chemical reactions in the concrete that cause it to harden are speeded up by the heat.

When it gets cold, like below 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit), the setting time of concrete slows down significantly. This means that we have to leave the formwork in place for much longer. And let me tell you, time is money in this business. The longer the formwork is in use, the more resources we tie up, and it can really cut into the project’s profitability.

In addition to the longer setting time, cold temperatures can also cause the concrete to freeze if it’s not properly protected. When concrete freezes, it expands, and this expansion can put a lot of pressure on the formwork. If the formwork isn’t strong enough to handle that pressure, it can warp or even break. And when the formwork is damaged, it’s no good for future use. We either have to repair it, which takes time and money, or replace it altogether.

Moisture is also a factor that goes hand in hand with temperature. In cold weather, moisture in the formwork can freeze. This can damage the formwork materials, especially if they’re made of wood. Frozen moisture can cause the wood to split or warp, which again affects the formwork’s usability.

So, what can we do to deal with these temperature-related issues? Well, for high temperatures, we can use retarders in the concrete. Retarders slow down the setting time of the concrete, giving us more control over when the formwork can be removed. We can also try to keep the formwork and the concrete cool by using shading or misting systems.

In cold weather, we can use accelerators in the concrete to speed up the setting time. We can also insulate the formwork and the concrete to keep them warm. There are special insulating blankets that we can use for this purpose.
